Perinatal AND Perimenopausal: Supporting Women through these (Sometimes Simultaneous) Life Transitions
(Approved for the Psychotherapy/Mental Health Track Advanced Training as well as CE for maintaining PMH-C)
$250
The Nurturing Mamas Network Training Institute has trained thousands of clinicians in Advanced Perinatal Mental Health since 2022.
Clock Hours: 3
Synchronous Distance Course
Target Audience: behavioral health and social workers who serve in the role of counseling/therapy.
Content Description:
This Intermediate Level program will explore how today, women in the United States are becoming mothers later in life compared to previous decades. More than 100,000 moms give birth each year while in their 40s – a period of life when they are likely in, or about to be in, perimenopause, the phase of reproductive health in which women’s hormones fluctuate, their menstrual cycle changes, and their identities shift. Perimenopause is a particularly vulnerable time for mood symptoms, with women at twice the risk of experiencing depression than at other life stages like pre-menopause. The perinatal period, too, is one when women are vulnerable to mood issues, with up to one in five experiencing a perinatal mood and anxiety disorder. So how can therapists help women who are both perinatal and perimenopausal?
Learning Objectives:
Participants will be able to:
1) Consider at least 2 systematic and cultural factors at play for women in this phase of life that may impact their experiences;
2) Integrate at least 3 cognitive behavioral therapy tools to help clients alleviate symptoms and improve self-confidence, drawing upon self-compassion, dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), mindfulness, and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT);
3) Develop at least 3 strategies to support perinatal women’s self-determination while advocating for themselves with their healthcare providers, in their personal relationships, and at their workplace in connection with perimenopause.

Bina and Felicia have both attended basic and advanced trainings through PSI, the Postpartum Stress Center, and are Certified in Perinatal Mental Health. We are trained and knowledgeable in serving families who may be dealing with the emotional and relational struggles that may accompany infertility, pregnancy or infant loss, perinatal mood and/or anxiety disorders, birth trauma, and more. We both serve the perinatal mental health population and provide training and consultation to other clinicians.
Mentoring groups are for mental health clinicians who are:

Does Breastfeeding Protect Maternal Mental Health? The Impact of Oxytocin and Stress
(This Recording is not approved for continuing education through NBCC or ASWB)
$125
Clock Hours: 3 total
Breastfeeding and depression have a complicated relationship; depressed mothers are less likely to breastfeed, yet exclusive breastfeeding lowers the risk of depression. Understanding the physiology of depression helps untangled these apparently contradictory findings. The key is understanding the stress vs oxytocin systems, which mutually suppress each other. Oxytocin suppresses stress, which lowers mothers’ risk. Conversely, when stress is dominant, it suppresses oxytocin, which makes both depression and breastfeeding difficulties more likely. Both skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding release oxytocin, but suckling releases far more via different neurons. Breastfeeding is unique in its ability to inhibit the stress response. Participants will learn about the oxytocin vs stress systems and understand the physiology that protects maternal mental health.
Objectives
To understand that depression and other mental health conditions increase the risk of premature breastfeeding cessation.
To understand why stress increases the risk of mental illness and how oxytocin suppresses the stress response.
To describe the role of the parvocellular vs magnocellular neurons in breastfeeding vs skin-to-skin contact.
To describe the unique benefits of breastfeeding for trauma survivors.
To describe why secure attachment is the most important goal of all, which breastfeeding facilitates.
Presenter: Kathleen A. KendallTackett, PhD, IBCLC, FAPA
Hidden Barriers, Thoughts and “Support” that Undermine Breastfeeding
Recent research has revealed that some barriers to breastfeeding come in the guise of “help.” This session identifies how mothers’ thoughts can undermine their breastfeeding efforts and how formula companies often prey upon these thoughts. Much of this section was drawn from research on the effects of lockdown during COVID. There are many parallels between that situation and mothers isolated at home with a new baby. This presentation also addresses social support. Most professionals agree that it is important to have, but defining it is tricky. Some actions called “support” actually undermine breastfeeding and become hinderances. Participants will learn how partners, grandmothers, community groups, and healthcare providers can avoid ineffective support and provide effective support. Providers can work with new families to ensure that mothers receive effective support.
Objectives
To understand how mothers’ thoughts may lead to supplementation and early breastfeeding cessation.
To understand how “support” can undermine breastfeeding and how effective support ensures its success.
Presenter: Kathleen A. KendallTackett, PhD, IBCLC, FAPA

When Breastfeeding is Not Possible: How to Help Mothers Move Through Grief and Form a Secure Attachment with Their Babies
(This Recording is not approved for continuing education through NBCC or ASWB)
$125
Clock Hours: 3 total
There are times when breastfeeding is not possible. Early breastfeeding cessation may be because of injury or physical limitations. Or it may be caused by bad advice and mismanagement. In either case, mothers’ feelings of sadness, anger, or failure can be profound. Professionals are in a key position to help mothers move through this loss in a positive way. The most important goal of new motherhood is still attainable: forming a secure attachment with their infants.
The goals of this presentation are to describe mothers’ feelings following loss of breastfeeding and guide them towards establishing a secure attachment with their babies. This approach does not minimize the importance of breastfeeding. Rather, it refocuses mothers’ attention on a key and still-attainable parenting goal. Drawing upon recent and classic literature from developmental psychology, participants will learn four evidence-based methods parents can use that increase the likelihood of secure attachment. These studies provide new information to lactation providers that can help them understand the rationale for parenting behaviors they often recommend. The goal is to help these mothers resolve their grief and feel positively about themselves as parents.
Objectives
To understand mothers’ feelings when they are not able to breastfeed.
To describe breastfeeding in the broader context of parenting and attachment.
To understand the lifelong importance of secure mother-baby attachment and how to promote it.
To describe four feeding and parenting activities that promote attachment.
Presenter: Kathleen A. Kendall-Tackett, PhD, IBCLC, FAPA
Feeding, Crying, and Mother-Infant Sleep: Why Standard Sleep Advice Threatens Breastfeeding and Harms Maternal Mental Health
Mother-infant sleep is surprisingly complex, yet practitioners issue advice that does not consider these complexities. When infants do not sleep, they often cry, which is stressful for mothers and can lead to depression. Simply telling mothers to supplement or avoid nighttime breastfeeding increases mothers’ fatigue and can harm their mental health. Infant sleep is influenced by their sex, temperament, and gestational age. Mothers’ depression, anxiety, or PTSD during pregnancy also influences their infants’ sleep. However, exclusive breastfeeding ameliorates many of these difficulties because it downregulates the hyperactive stress response. It also protects mothers’ mental health because it leads to better sleep. This session also offers suggestions for how to help mothers with extreme fatigue.
Objectives
To describe how characteristics, such as infant temperament and sex, and mothers’ mental health during pregnancy can influence mother-infant sleep.
To understand the bidirectional nature of mothers’ sleep and depression.
To compare a multi-factorial model of mother-infant sleep with simplistic sleep advice that increases mothers’ fatigue, cause breastfeeding to fail, and increase mothers’ risk of depression.
To describe two ways that exclusive breastfeeding changes sleep in a way that protects mothers’ mental health.
To understand why mothers are often pressured to supplement or wean.
To facilitate emergency strategies for very fatigued new mothers.

“SHE SHOULD BE HERE” UNDERSTANDING THE IMPACTS OF MOTHER LOSS ON MATRESCENCE & PERINATAL CARE
(This Recording is not approved for continuing education through NBCC or ASWB)
$125
Clock Hours: 3
Content Description:
Mother loss, in the context of perinatal identity development & postpartum healing, is a topic lacking in discussion in clinical circles. Mother loss is not classified as any type of trauma or adjustment in the literature, yet those who give birth after the loss of their own mother carry a heavy & unique emotional load on top of adjusting to life with a baby. The nuances of disenfranchised grief & aftergrief are examined through the dual process model of grief & a developmental model known as meaning-making. This presentation presents a framework for understanding both disenfranchised grief and aftergrief for postpartum healing based on Niemeyer’s developmental theory of grief & the dual process model. Interventions & examples are included. For clarity around this presentation, the type of ‘mother-loss’ referenced is one where the relationship between mother & daughter/children is healthy, happy, & securely attached. The loss of a mother in this presentation refers to an experience that was deeply painful following a terminal illness.
Presenter: Olivia D. Wedel, PhD, LPC-S, NCC, PMH-C
Objectives:
Participants will examine aspects of disenfranchised grief and aftergrief as a result of mother loss and impacts matrescence
Participants will be able to identify at least three ways they can support postpartum clients who are dealing with mother loss
Participants will be able to identify components of a developmental model of grief and the dual process model to support postpartum clients.

The Scarlett “A”: Abortion as a Loss
(This Recording is not approved for continuing education through NBCC or ASWB)
$125
Clock Hours: 3
Content Description:
From 1973 until 2022, people who no longer desired to be pregnant in the United States were able to access a safe & legal procedure to eradicate the state of pregnancy. Abortion is complex not only for the society & culture we are steeped in, but also for the individuals & families that experience them. As clinicians, we need to consider how we can best help our clients around this issue with the recognition that there are laws that complicate our care. Additionally, there are many myths about what occurs post-abortion psychologically. This workshop will speak to the spectrum of emotional outcomes after an abortion.
Presenter: Julie Bindeman Psy-D
Learning Objectives:
Participants will be able to:
Discern nuances & differences between various types of abortion & the emotional aftermath of each.
Identify the sociological narratives that shape the abortion dialogue & how they impact those seeking & obtaining abortion care.
Identify potential risks for clinicians discussing abortion with their clients, both presently & potentially in the future.
