Content Description:
This Intermediate Level program will explore how today, women in the United States are becoming mothers later in life compared to previous decades. More than 100,000 moms give birth each year while in their 40s – a period of life when they are likely in, or about to be in, perimenopause, the phase of reproductive health in which women’s hormones fluctuate, their menstrual cycle changes, and their identities shift. Perimenopause is a particularly vulnerable time for mood symptoms, with women at twice the risk of experiencing depression than at other life stages like pre-menopause. The perinatal period, too, is one when women are vulnerable to mood issues, with up to one in five experiencing a perinatal mood and anxiety disorder. So how can therapists help women who are both perinatal and perimenopausal?
Learning Objectives:
Participants will be able to:
1) Consider at least 2 systematic and cultural factors at play for women in this phase of
life that may impact their experiences;
3) Integrate at least 3 cognitive behavioral therapy tools to help clients alleviate
symptoms and improve self-confidence, drawing upon self-compassion,
dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), mindfulness, and acceptance and
commitment therapy (ACT);
4) Develop at least 3 strategies to support perinatal women’s self-determination while
advocating for themselves with their healthcare providers, in their personal
relationships, and at their workplace in connection with perimenopause.
