Mentoring the Perinatal Mental Health Professional

A Reflective Consultation Group for Perinatal Mental Health Clinicians

Working in perinatal mental health asks a great deal of us as clinicians. The work is meaningful, complex, and deeply human—and our continued growth requires more than additional trainings or knowing the “right” intervention.

Mentoring the Perinatal Mental Health Professional is a small, ongoing reflective consultation group for clinicians who want a thoughtful space to examine their clinical work, deepen their understanding of themselves as therapists, and grow alongside other professionals who understand the unique complexities of perinatal mental health.

Groups are facilitated by Bina Bird, LMFT-S, PMH-C, and Felicia Hurst, LPC-S, PMH-C, experienced perinatal mental health clinicians, supervisors, educators, and consultants with nearly 30 years of combined experience serving the perinatal population.

Together, Bina and Felicia bring extensive experience in perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, reproductive and birth trauma, grief and loss, complex clinical presentations, professional development, supervision, and the realities of sustaining a career caring for individuals and families during the perinatal period.

This group is for clinicians who want to:

  • Bring perinatal cases into consultation and think more deeply about complex clinical work.

  • Explore the self of the therapist, including countertransference, emotional responses, assumptions, biases, boundaries, and the ways our own experiences can enter the therapeutic relationship.

  • Develop greater confidence and discernment rather than simply collecting more techniques.

  • Reflect honestly on difficult cases, clinical uncertainty, and the moments when there may not be a simple “right” answer.

  • Attend to professional sustainability, including boundaries, workload, emotional labor, isolation, and the impact of repeatedly holding painful or complex stories.

  • Learn from the perspectives and experiences of other perinatal mental health clinicians.

  • Build meaningful professional relationships within a small, consistent community.

  • Engage thoughtfully with issues of identity, culture, power, access, bias, and inequity as they arise within our clinical work.

  • Approach consultation with curiosity, humility, openness, and respect for differing perspectives.

This group is especially appropriate for clinicians who are actively working with the perinatal population and have foundational training in perinatal mental health. You do not need to have every answer—or decades of experience. You do need a willingness to reflect deeply on your work, receive thoughtful feedback, and contribute meaningfully to the growth of others.

What Reflective Consultation Looks Like

This is not a lecture series, formal supervision, or a space devoted solely to finding solutions to difficult cases.

Reflective consultation creates room to slow down and think together.

A clinician may bring a challenging case, an interaction that continues to stay with them, uncertainty about how to proceed, a strong emotional response, a professional boundary question, or a broader struggle arising from the work. Rather than immediately moving to advice, we consider the clinical situation, the therapeutic relationship, the systems surrounding the client, and what may be happening within the clinician herself.

At times, that means discussing interventions and clinical approaches. At other times, the most important question may be:

What is this work asking of you—and what is happening within you as you do it?

We believe excellent clinical care grows not only from knowledge and skill, but from a clinician's capacity for reflection, curiosity, humility, connection, and continued development.

How the Groups Work

Groups meet monthly for 90 minutes and are intentionally kept small to allow space for meaningful conversation, case consultation, and reflection.

Meetings are held virtually on Mondays from 11:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m. Central Time, with separate Spring and Fall groups.

Participants are encouraged to attend consistently so that the group can develop the trust, familiarity, and depth that make reflective consultation most valuable.

  • Fall 2026 Dates: 8/17, 9/28, 10/5, 11/9, 12/7 (this group is full)
