Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills for Perinatal Mental Health

(Approved for the Psychotherapy/Mental Health Track Advanced Training as well as CE for maintaining PMH-C)

Clock Hours: 4

Content Description:

Perinatal mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, and stress, can significantly impact the well-being of both expectant and postpartum individuals. DBT, known for its emphasis on mindfulness, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and distress tolerance, offers a powerful therapeutic framework to address these challenges.

This training is designed to equip therapists with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively apply Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) techniques in the treatment of perinatal mental health concerns. This includes a review of both the theory behind DBT, and examples of how to use and apply many of the core DBT skills.

The instructor will provide real-life examples of how to tailor DBT concepts to address the unique concerns of the perinatal period. This includes an explanation of how the biosocial model applies to pregnancy and postpartum, and a deep dive into the complex skills of radical acceptance and dialectical thinking which are critical for all parents.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  1. Apply the core principles of Dialectical Behavior Therapy to perinatal mental health treatment.

  2. Identify the core skills modules of DBT and what each skill set has to offer to the perinatal population

  3.  Teach the core skills of Radical Acceptance and Dialectical Thinking

  4.  Explore case studies and practical applications of DBT in perinatal therapy.
