Counseling for Ages Birth to Five

Attachment and Bonding

Nurturing Mamas Network believes in the importance of treating parent/child dyads with the use of evidence-based treatments that enhance bonding. This rapidly expanding field of treatment is called Infant Mental Health. Clinicians who have distinct trainings in working with caregiver/child relationships are part of the team. These clinicians can assess parent/child dyads for the purpose of treatment and offer services that enhance and promote safe and secure attachments.

Our society makes bonding and attachment seem like this beautiful, magical moment where everything just falls into place, but in reality, it often takes time, special attention and sometimes treatment to ensure that your child is equipped with skills that you might not have and answers your parents may not have known about. When considering Infant Mental Health, some might envision a baby laying on a couch talking about their issues, but this actually takes place between Mamas and their babies over a series of weeks. Child Parent Psychotherapy, Circle of Security and specialized training in attachment allow for safe exploration of what it takes to parent mindfully, enhance emotional regulation skills and understand how the way we were parented impacts our present parenting choices.

The evidence behind prevention and early treatment shows us that with special attention aimed at the first five years is important throughout the lifetime since brain development is happening so rapidly for infants and young children. This is one of the things that makes Nurturing Mamas Network distinct – we focus on prevention and treatment of infants, toddlers and young children and their parents. The potential outcomes: A more well-adjusted toddler, a preschooler with greater emotional literacy and families who can work on repairing the inevitable ruptures and grow cohesive, strong bonds.
